Former Teacher Replaced a Buena Vista Extremist School Board Member Backed by Moms for Liberty

October 2026

Red, Wine & Blue recently announced that Nancy Paricio, a Red Wine & Blue group leader and former teacher, replaced an extremist school board member who was backed by the Republican Party, the Colorado Conservative Patriot Alliance and Moms for Liberty.

According to Red, Wine & Blue, Brett Mitchell was elected to the Buena Vista school board in 2023. The situation escalated this summer when the board voted to recognize June as Pride Month. Mitchell, casting the sole dissenting vote, reacted strongly. He delivered a lengthy statement accusing the board of creating a “political scene” and “pushing ideology” instead of supporting students. However, the resolution explicitly aimed to support students.

The district has faced issues of racist and homophobic bullying, including a Civil Rights complaint filed by a parent. While a proclamation recognizing Pride Month cannot solve such complex challenges, the five other board members believed it would be a positive gesture to show LGBTQ+ students they are seen and supported. Mitchell disagreed. After reading his statement, he resigned on the spot and left the meeting. Moms for Liberty Throws A Tantrum
